They are two completely different cards. The ABHA card carries a 14-digit health ID that links your medical records digitally — it pays for nothing. The Ayushman card is a PM-JAY beneficiary card that entitles an eligible family to cashless hospital treatment — it stores no medical records.
The confusion is understandable: both come from Ayushman Bharat, both are issued under the National Health Authority, and both are described as "health cards". But mixing them up leads patients to arrive at a hospital expecting free treatment on an ABHA card, and hospitals to register scheme patients incorrectly.

What the ABHA Card Actually Does
An ABHA is a permanent health identifier. When you share it at an ABDM-connected facility, three things become possible:
- Faster registration. With Scan and Share, you scan a QR code at the hospital and your name, age, gender and address reach the front desk digitally — no form, no misspelt name, no duplicate file.
- Records that follow you. Prescriptions, lab reports, and discharge summaries from any ABDM-connected facility can be linked to your ABHA and retrieved at a different hospital later, with your consent.
- Control over sharing. Every request to view your records must be approved by you, is time-bound, and can be revoked. See is ABHA safe.
What it does not do is pay a bill, provide any discount, or guarantee any treatment. Full detail in what is ABHA ID and how to create an ABHA card.
What the Ayushman Card Actually Does
The Ayushman Card identifies a verified PM-JAY beneficiary. Presented at an empanelled hospital, it entitles the family to cashless secondary and tertiary hospitalisation up to the scheme's annual cover, billed at defined package rates directly to the scheme rather than to the patient.
Its limits matter as much as its benefits. It works only at empanelled hospitals, only for covered procedures, and only for verified beneficiaries — eligibility is determined by scheme criteria, not by application. It also stores no medical history: a patient can be treated across five PM-JAY hospitals and still have five disconnected paper files unless those hospitals are ABDM-connected and the records are ABHA-linked.
Do You Need Both?
If you are eligible for PM-JAY: yes, both are worth having, and they complement each other. The Ayushman card covers the cost of treatment; the ABHA keeps the record of that treatment portable so your next doctor can see what was done.
If you are not eligible for PM-JAY: you can still create an ABHA. It is open to every citizen regardless of income, and its benefits — faster registration, portable records, control over sharing — apply whether you pay cash, use private insurance, or are covered by a corporate policy.
Neither card is mandatory. A hospital cannot refuse treatment because you have neither.
How Hospitals Should Handle Both at the Front Desk
For a hospital, these two cards trigger different workflows, and confusing them creates real operational problems:
- ABHA is an identity step. At registration, create or verify the patient's ABHA to pull demographics and link the visit's records. This applies to every patient, regardless of how they are paying.
- Ayushman card is a payer step. Verify the beneficiary against the scheme, confirm the procedure is covered, raise pre-authorisation, and bill at package rates — not your standard tariff.
- Keep the rate structures separate. Your billing system must hold scheme package rates, TPA rates, and cash tariffs independently against the same clinical record. Hospitals that manage scheme billing in a side register lose money to unclaimed and under-claimed cases.
- Train the front desk on the difference. Staff who tell an ABHA-only patient they qualify for free treatment create an avoidable dispute at discharge.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the ABHA card the same as the Ayushman card?
No. The ABHA card is a digital health identity that links your medical records across hospitals and provides no financial cover. The Ayushman card is a PM-JAY beneficiary card that entitles eligible families to cashless hospital treatment and stores no medical records. They come from the two different arms of Ayushman Bharat.
Can I get free treatment with an ABHA card?
No. An ABHA card provides no financial cover, discount, or treatment entitlement of any kind. Free cashless treatment under Ayushman Bharat requires PM-JAY eligibility and an Ayushman card, used at an empanelled hospital.
Is the ABHA card free, and who can apply?
ABHA is free and available to every Indian citizen. It can be created in minutes using an Aadhaar-linked mobile OTP or a mobile number alone, either through the official ABHA app and portal or at the front desk of a hospital running ABDM-certified software.
Do I need an ABHA number to use my Ayushman card?
An ABHA is not a prerequisite for claiming PM-JAY benefits. However, hospitals increasingly capture both at registration, because the ABHA links the treatment record digitally while the Ayushman card handles payment — and several scheme workflows now expect ABHA-linked records.
Can I have an ABHA if I am not eligible for Ayushman Bharat insurance?
Yes. PM-JAY eligibility is based on scheme criteria, but ABHA is universal and voluntary for every citizen. Income, insurance status, and employment have no bearing on your ability to create an ABHA.
Handle Both Correctly in One System
Healthixio creates and verifies ABHA at registration and manages PM-JAY package billing, TPA claims, and cash tariffs against the same patient record — so your front desk never has to choose between the two workflows. See the ABHA module and billing module, or request a demo on 07513135857.
